Academics

Classes at Cooper College are taught mainly through asynchronous instruction. There are several virtual sessions and occasional in person sessions, using seminar/discussion style. Students and faculty work through various classically inspired and ancient/older texts from diverse authors. Students and faculty also read Biblical texts, in order to find meaning in the Holy Scriptures and to connect this understanding to daily living so that they may be equipped to impact the world from a deeply intellectual and spiritually grounded perspective. All students within a semester follow the same course of study and each semester students complete, essays, exams, projects, etc. in order to demonstrate their comprehension and synthesis of all texts that are studied. All certificates and degrees are in Classical Christian Studies.

Current and Upcoming Semesters:

Cohort 1: Starting January 2024

Students are studying the following texts: The Black Intellectual Tradition, Black Presence in the Bible, 1st 5 books of the Old Testament, The 4 Gospels, and The Canon of Human Civilization (a collection of texts compiled by Dr. Prather that explores various intellectual traditions). There is a midterm exam and there is also a midsemester seminar discussion on the Black Intellectual Tradition. The semester will end with a thesis that will be presented to the group

Cohort 2: Starting January 2025

Students will study the following texts: The Black Intellectual Tradition, Black Presence in the Bible, The Messianic Torah Devotional (to study the 1st 5 books of the Bible as the Torah), and The Voice of Anna Julia Cooper (essays from AJC). There is a midsemester seminar discussion on the Black Intellectual Tradition. The semester will end with a thesis that will be presented to the group. The seminar and thesis are done online.

We ask that all students of Cooper College plan to attend Redefining Classics at Catholic University during the summer of 2026, for in person connection and fellowship. We will post the exact dates of the event soon!
